There is this Second Life craze going around and our school actually has its own portal. Out of curiosity, I decided to log on and try it this virtual experience.

But the server keeps on crashing, so much so that I gave up and uninstalled everything. Oh well, maybe its fate that I'm supposed to start revising for my exams instead of doing this.

Decided to change my blog skin after using the nostalgia theme for almost three years.

This also signify a new start to the blog. It's time to look ahead into the future, instead of isolating myself in my own fantasy world. There will be more abstract thinking and personal reflections over issues instead of just reminiscing and grumble over how reality is so different from my expectations. It's time to brave the new world.

Of course, that doesn't mean that I don't treasure old stuff anymore.

Life shouldn't be all about studying for the exams. Tomorrow is Earth Day. This year my personal goal is to help to cut down the amount of CO2 emission into our atmosphere. (CO2 emission is one of the main causes for global warming)

Reduce the amount of paper use can help to cut down on the number of trees felled to produce the paper. In case you still don't know, Trees play an extremely important role in absorbing the amount of CO2.

Convince my parents to take more public transport instead of driving on certain days. If more people can forgo their cars for buses, the number of CO2 emission from exhaust fumes will be greatly reduced.

Cut down on electricity usage not only saves you money from expensive bills, it also helps to conserve the limited oil supply that we have. Of course, coal generators also contribute a lot of CO2.

It's time to do your part for the environment again. Every little action counts in creating a sustainable environment for our future.

Are you happy with your life?

After watching this video in psychology lecture - Why are we happy? Why aren't we happy? (Dan Gilbert) I'm quite sure that contentment can indeed bring some form of happiness.

But I didn't know you can actually create sythetic happiness. If everyone are contented with their own lot in life, the capitalist system of economy will sure fail. Since the capitalist economy is still here, it mean that our wants are indeed unlimited. Maybe its our innate nature to keep wanting newer things?

Maybe that's why most people are never contented, thus never happy? (This is only based on the assumption that material wants can create happiness, there are always exceptions. So please don't terrorise my blog because of this article.)

I found out that I'm developing a strong interest in social issues as well as politics. Seeing how recent events can be explained using sociological theories seem to provide me with an answer to the persistence of certain social problems.

Now I'm actually contemplating whether to do sociology instead of psychology.

Headed down to xia's communications school for her video production viewing yesterday. They had to create a 1 minute video for their project and there was this public viewing by their cohort peers for their final presentation.

I was quite impressed by some of their productions, especially the "running", "lego mas", "skirtties" just to name a few. Most of them have a certain standard so it was a fruitful experience watching them. It's quite a pity that these videos are only 1 minute long, it's abit short to fully portray a good plot.

And who says Singaporeans lack creativity? Definitely an eye-opener yesterday at NTU. Keep up the good work!

Okie, I'm almost going bonkers with this sociology project. It's about time I start to chew on dictionaries again to improve on my vocabulary. It's tough work trying to rephrase sentences in order to cut down on the word count.

Just to test your proficiency in English, how many V words in this paragraph can you explain the meaning of it without any external reference?

What will the world be like in the Year 3000?

p.s Don't think I'm going crazy, I'm just inspired to think about the kind of society we will have in the future. Especially when I ponder over futuristic settings in Orwell's 1984, Huxley's Brave New World, Burgess's A Clockwork Orange, Alan Moore's V for Vendetta and Plato's Republic.

Can we eventually create a utopia?

And the setbacks just keeping on pressurizing me. Oh man, I can't imagine my econs will ever join in the ranks of "in serious trouble" modules. The third module that I fared way below average.

Either the people in sch are too smart that they're pushing up the difficulty of examinations or I'm simply not well prepared for uni life yet.

After reading through this article on "Lament of the Median Student" on ST March 28, I'm beginning to wonder if the former is a more likely cause.

Sometimes this bell curve concept only serve to segregate the students even more.

After meeting up with the mixedrice for steamboat on Good Friday, it's time to study again.

I'm struck with another blow when my new media mid term performed less than my expectations. Considering that the paper wasn't very difficult, I can only blame overconfidence and carelessness for messing everything up.

This is the second time my result performed lower than the average mean. arghh... what is happening??

Maybe I don't really have a lot of free time. Instead of procrastinating over whether to play or study, I ought to come to a decision and settle for studying, especially when I saw my disappointing results again.

This time round, it's psychology that's pulling my grades now. I can't afford to screw up my major modules again.

After spending time doing my sociology mid test, I found out how shallow my scope of understanding of everything I have to learn. And it is no joking matter, considering the stiff competition and the bell curve approach the university uses.

It's study, study and study again.

Economics paper is so weird, the department actually gives 1.5hrs to do 30 MCQ questions, and the paper looks easy on the surface. It's either the questions are too tricky that's why the time given is so long or the examiners are just way too nice.

I shall not care about that for now, time to prepare for the sociology paper coming up next.

These days instead of studying for my econs and sociology to prepare for the mid terms on friday, I ended up spending my time trying to solve the rubix cube.

After playing around for a week, I still can't get it right. And I absolutely refused to read the online solutions (it defeats the entire purpose) I shall solve it ultimately.

Spent the remaining of my time reading Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights, so that I can fulfil the 1 book per month 2008 resolution. The book is fantastic and i'm totally engrossed in it.

50 more pages and I'm done.

I didn't know economics apply in such cases too. Here's a funny example from my lecture.

The Prisoners' Dilemma

The Story
Bonnie and Clyde were caught and charged for a crime.
The police take them into separate rooms, where each prisoner must decide to either to confess or not to confess without knowing what the other prisoner will do.

Rules
The police tell each prisoner that they have collected enough evidence to send both to prison for 3 years. (i.e if both do not confess, the prosecution will be based on this evidence)

If only one prisoner confesses and testifies against the other, that prisoner will get only 1 year and the other will get 8 years.

If both confess, each will get 5 years.

What should they do in this case? To confess or not to confess?

Ahhh... The two mid-term exams are over and done with. All I need to do now is to finish my two mid-term papers this friday and hurray, off for a holiday.

Haha. I don't really have the time to go for holidays though, just spending some time at my grandma's house to relax. The best thing is there's no computers or internet there, guess I'll cope with it somehow. People nowadays are spending too much time on their computers, it's time to get back with the real reality. Too much radiation from these technological stuff kills off lots of brain neurons.

I'll glad take this opportunity and get back with nature, while reading the book from Dalai Lama. That's how life should be.

Lol, I'm already dreaming. It's time to work hard and enjoy the break that comes after that.

Still mugging for my new media and psy mid terms. Seems that the primacy and recency effect is so true. After all that reading, I can barely remember anything at all.

I better stick to some self-referencing/spacing strategies for studying.

Hope everything ends well tomorrow. I need a break from school.

Considering that I have too much free time with nothing to do, I decided to fully utilise all of them by getting myself another cca, the NUS Odac.

Now I'm looking forward to fulfilling my 26 adventure camps on my wishlist.
